Editors Roundtable: Most Anticipated Wii Games

For the very first installment of the Editors Roundtable, monthly fan talk feature, the writers here at onnintendo.com put their two cents in about which games they look forward to the most for Nintendo’s upcoming console, the Wii.

Pizzamousechips:

My most anticipated Wii games? Wow, there are so many. Brawl obviously. Mario Paint should be a must buy, since nothing like it has come out since, well, the Super Nintendo original. As for launch titles, every first party title screams buy me! Twilight Princess should practically launch with a “best-seller” sticker from the get-go. Corruption should be exciting on another level, being the first game most people play with the new Wii-specific FPS controls, including me. I’m not sure what happened to the new WarioWare, but if that makes it, you better believe I’m picking it up. It’ll be my show-off, pick-up-and-play game with my non-gamer friends and family.

On the third-party front, I’m giving my money to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, if it really makes launch. SquareEnix isn’t known for rushing games, so I think even if it launches early with the other first-generation games, it will have second-generation quality. Plus, cooperative online multiplayer isn’t something I’ll be getting with Zelda or Metroid, unless Nintendo pulls a fast one. Other than that, Metal Slug Anthology looks like a worthy purchase. It’s one of my favorite arcade games, and it’ll get me into the Virtual Console mindset.

So, my launch buys are:

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers

Metal Slug Anthology

Sure, that’s a wallet killer, but it’s still cheaper than a bare-bones PS3. ;)

Retro:

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy was a HUGE surprise for me at e3. I was definitely not expecting Nintendo to reveal the next big Mario game, and it completely threw me off. Now, I haven’t gotten a chance to play it yet, but after seeing many videos on IGN (and here, of course), I am definitely excited about it. The control scheme is ingenious, combining button presses with physical movement. I’ve seen that it’s quite easy to adapt to it, and it becomes more second-nature when you play it for a while. Then, you include the fact that you are Mario in Space. This is one game I’m DEFINITELY going to buy the day it comes out.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. is always a fantastic game. It’s been great since the days on the N64, back when Ness and Captain Falcon were unlockable characters; and for many reasons, it is my most anticipated game. I’ve even started practicing like crazy in SSBM for the GameCube again in preparation for it. The main reasons I’m so excited about it:

1) It’s going to be online…

The idea that a new edition of Smash Bros. will be online is almost too much to take. This is a game that has been simply begging to be online since its GameCube version. It is already as popular as Halo 2 in MLG (Major League Gaming), and an online mode will only further enhance its credibility. Plus, I get to own my friend in Texas.

2) More characters…

I really hope they include a lot of characters for SSBB. Sora (the company built by Nintendo and Sakurai, the director of Smash Bros. throughout the ages) has already shown off characters such as Pit and Snake, and will most likely have around 30-40 characters for SSBB. This will be absolutely fantastic, considering Smash Bros. Melee had 26 characters.

3) Tighter Graphics…

As much as a Nintendo fan doesn’t like to admit, game graphics are a large factor in buying a game. You don’t want to buy the game if it looks like utter crap, especially if that utter crap plays terribly. It’s a good thing SSBB will have the aforementioned tighter graphics, and that the game will (hopefully) be just as much of a joy to play as its predecessors, maybe more.

Sporkguy:

The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess

I absolutely love the Zelda series. The games are great, and I would buy Nintendo systems for Zelda games alone. Twilight Princess looks great, and I am sure it will feel great too (now that we can swing Link’s sword with the Wiimote). The simple fact that Zelda is a launch game should make the Wii one of the best consoles ever.

Project H.A.M.M.E.R.

Wow! This game looks awesome to me. Robots invading the earth, mixed with the Wii, and a big freaking hammer – I’m sold! That’s pretty much all I have to say about it.

Wii Sports:

I think Wii Sports and similar games will be the bread and butter for the Wii system, and rightfully so. I look forward to many fun and addicting games of tennis, ping pong, baseball, golf, fencing, and so many more exciting uses of the Wiimote to entertain me in the future. These kinds of games will be the start of changes in the video game industry, for the better.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Although I loved video games as a youth, I did miss a lot of good games. The virtual console will give me a good opportunity to play old games for the first time. A Link to the Past is number one on my list.

Megaton:

I chose my “most anticipated Wii games” from the launch list we posted previously, so I left out my favorite: Super Mario Galaxy. Anyhow, on with the goods.

My first choice is Wii Sports. Not only is Wii Sports a fun game, it is also the game that will spawn endless videogame parties across the nation. I strongly feel that Wii Sports will have a greater impact on the industry than Konami’s DDR did. Also, although Wii Sports: Airplane may not make it into the package, flying an airplane in the game is probably the coolest thing ever. I played Wii Sports: Baseball at E3 and can say with certainty that people who generally don’t follow sports and sports enthusiasts alike will fall in love with this game. This will be the first game to shatter the conventional, boring, and tedious control methods employed in sports games thus far. I look forward to playing the game again and hosting many Wii Sports: Tennis parties.

Second, a controversial choice: Elebits from Konami. Yes I know, you all think I’m crazy. Let me explain. From what I see, Elebits implements WiiPointer functionality in a way that mimics ones hand. The ability to move, hit and search for anything in an environment that is native to all has me excited. Collecting Elebits may not be your cup of tea, but I think the game will charm anyone who sees it in action. I can picture any family member being intrigued and wanting to try out the game after seeing someone open a cupboard, clear a table and even throw a toaster out of the way while in search of Elebits. My interest in this game is primarily in the area of concept and appeal to the mass market. I myself can’t wait to play it, but even more, I can’t wait to see all the new gamers try it out.

There are many more games I am interested in playing and eagerly anticipating. Zelda, Red Steel, Trauma Center, Excite Truck, and, believe it or not, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. I played Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam at E3, and after some fumbling, I was awed by the controls. Excite Truck is said to employ similar controls, and I can’t wait to get my hands on that game either.

Essentially I’m looking for new, innovative controls, new types of games and new ways to play old games. Wii Sports, Elebits, Excite Truck, and Red Steel are where I will start my search.

Incognito:

Most anticipated Wii game #1: Dragonball Z

Reason: I am a huge Dragonball fan, but also I'm looking forward to seeing how this game takes advantage of the Wiimote. I imagine a fireball move would be exactly like pressing the pattern combo on a D-pad, except you would swing the Wiimote in that pattern. This could potentially spawn a new controls-standard for future fighting games, the way Street Fighter did in the past.

Most anticipated Wii game #2: Excite Truck

Reason: When I first played this game at E3, I was immediately addicted to the cool graphics and ease of control. I think another controls-standard has been established here. I think future racing games will adopt this standard, making Wii racing games easier to control, and in turn, more fun. You have total control of the vehicle all of the time, even when you go flying into the air, you can control the way the truck lands to gain more points. Nintendo really did do a good job on this game; I think all fellow gamers will definitely enjoy it.

"You don’t want to buy the game if it looks like utter crap, especially if that utter crap plays terribly." lmao. True, true.

I'm Definitely Anticipating:

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
LoZ: Twilight Princess
Smash Bros. Brawl
Red Steel

I'm also looking forward to the virtual console. I'm looking forward to hearing about Shenmue, originally for the (RIP) Dreamcast. They say there is a possibility of it being released on the Wii. :D
