Editors Roundtable: Series Resurrection

For the second installment of the Editors Roundtable, each writer recalls a favorite game series that they would like resurrected on either the Wii or the DS.

Pizzamousechips:

What games would I like to see remade for the DS or Wii? It seems like there would be too many to name, but it’s actually quite hard to think of more than just a few. Well, I’ll try, Wii first.

I’m going to start off with Kid Icarus. Hopefully it’ll get enough VC downloads for Nintendo to realize how much that franchise needs reviving. And since we already have somewhat of a modern 3D model for the character due to Brawl, a Wii Icarus platformer might not be so far off.

Next, I’d like to see a traditional Donkey Kong game. You know, none with bongos or puzzle style swinging… a good old platformer. Unfortunately, Rare, the folks behind the wonderful yet underrated Donkey Kong 64, aren’t in any position to make it, so this is some big wishful thinking—at least for the near future.

A full-fledged remake of Punch-out would be nice too. It would have to have the same characters and art-style, just updated for the Wii’s unique controls. That would be a nice nostalgia trip.

As far as the DS goes, things have been going so well that I can’t think of anything franchise-wise I’d like to see brought back. The game companies are really on top of things.

Especially Nintendo. I want more Mario, they’re bringing more Mario. I want more Zelda, there’s more Zelda. Same with Metroid, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party, WarioWare… All of my favorites are already planned to come back.

Retro:

My choice for a series would definitely be Time Crisis, and I hope they bring it back on Wii. Now, I know this isn’t a series that really needs “resurrecting” since they’ve been making versions on the PS2 already, but it just isn’t the same when you have to plug in another peripheral other than the PS2 controller, and if you want to play two-player, you’d have to buy another lightgun.

I guess I could go out and buy the PS2 version. But, I just don’t find it appealing for some reason.

Now on the Wii, however, I am left with total excitement.

I’ve always loved Time Crisis… playing it at the movie theatres with my friends left me with a thrill every time, it was just so much fun to play. When the facts about the Wii remote really got set into stone in my head, I realized just how awesome it would be to have a Time Crisis title! You see, Time Crisis is an on-rails shooting game where you stop at significant points (you don’t choose where to stop), duck/reload, and shoot at enemies. It is such a fun game that it isn’t even funny. Haha, such a fun game that it isn’t even funny. Get it? I me- damn, I’m rambling again.

The point is, this game would be so CRAZY-COOL on the Wii, that I would buy it even if it were $20 more than the normal Wii game. Here’s hoping Namco gets smart and makes one!

Sporkguy:

One game I would love to see brought back on the Nintendo DS is NBA Jam, but made differently from Midway and Acclaim’s newer basketball arcade games. I would like to see the game made very similar to its original concept, only with updated graphics. Codes that let you play as celebrities such as the 1st lady and Will Ferrell would be a must.

A lesser known game I would like a sequel to is Pizza Tycoon. Very underrated as far as tycoon games go, this 1994 computer game was as much about the underworld as it was about selling pizza. This is another game which would be suited well to the Nintendo DS, although a revamped design including GTA/Driver style mob missions would lend itself well to a console such as the Wii, and the Wii-mote would help you become the master pizza creator which your character strives to be. Unfortunately Atari shut down its creator MicroProse back in 2003, and it had already been nearly ten years since Pizza Tycoon was released. This dream seems like an impossible one.

A Boy and His Blob was creative genius on the NES and I would love to see a sequel for it as well. Majesco had been working on one for the DS scheduled for a November 2005 release, although we are nearing November 2006 and it is still not released.

Incognito:

I would like to see Killer Instinct resurrected for the Wii. It will be fun to see how they can make this game playable with the Wii controls while maintaining the quality of the first Killer Instinct game. Though this is highly unlikely, if resurrected, it will be really popular amongst the Killer Instinct fans, as well as the casual gamers.

One game I will really like to see is a remake of Duck Hunt. Duck Hunt was amazing when I first played it, and I immediately became addicted to it. With the Wii controller this game will rock. I had the opportunity to play this game at E3 with the Wii-mote; however I will like to see more features in this game, maybe even make a full game out of it.

They can even have boss ducks that you have to shoot after the first five stages. The stages might even be different where the ducks might even be able to attack. Maybe the dog can get shot too, which will make you lose points, or the dog can be a bad guy who pretends to be your friend while leading you to the main boss duck in exchange for an egg. You might even be able to attack both the main boss duck and the dog at the same time, the possibilities are endless. With the right imagination this mini-game can be made into a full version game with a lot of fun. The Wii controls will definitely make this game a good one.

Megaton:

There are many games that I enjoyed in the past, yet few come to mind as games that I would like resurrected. The games that do come to mind, like Super Mario Bros. and whatnot have continued to live on. There are however a couple of games that I really loved, which have either gone bad or have simply not been continued – Contra and Punch-Out.

Contra was easily one of my favorite games of the NES days. I, along with many others, played endlessly until we were able to end the game without losing a single life. The Konami Code was not needed the way I played. To make a long story short, I love this game and hate what Konami has done to it. I’d like to see a new Contra which retains what made the NES classic such a hit. The recently released, and phenomenally successful, New Super Mario Bros. should be taken as big hint by Konami. Regardless of what happens, I will soon be enjoying the original Contra on the Virtual Console.

Not many games exist today that are built with a fundamental understanding of videogame design. Designers have become lazy and consumed by irrelevancies. I don’t know if it is drugs or just tainted beer but some of these guys have really lost touch. Videogames have gone from Fantasy to Reality, and let me tell you, Reality does not make for a good game. What more evidence do you need than a simple purchase of EA’s Fight Night with Super Punch-Out included?

When I bought Fight Night for my GameCube, It came as no surprise to me that Super Punch-Out is a much better game even today. For the record Super Punch-Out was released ten years before the Fight Night game in question. Simply put, I would like to see Nintendo create a new Punch-Out for the Wii. I would also like to see Nintendo actively promote their understanding of videogame design and hopefully bring an end to nonsense like Fight Night.

Star Tropics, and Earthbound. Bring the old school versions back, but also updated versions of them, for the new system.

Pretty much all those games are awesome. I'd also like to see Sega do something with Wonder Boy or even Hudson with Adventure Island... That Kid Icarus looks awesome for the DS as is.
